Sketchup Free for DIY Projects
I recently had a conversation with a client . I did a 3D model of their project using Sketchup Pro (3d modeling program). Him and his wife loved the design and asked for photos to show their family. While waiting for the prints, I mentioned how he could actually download a program called “Sketchup Viewer” which would allow them to spin the model around and navigate the 3d model at their own time. Of course, they got really excited!
As we continued talking, I was able to talk to him about how awesome the program is and how easy it is to use. So easy that someone can use the free version of Sketchup, learn it and use it for their personal projects.
What is Sketchup?
Sketchup is a 3D modeling software. I use it heavily for the projects I work on. Not only do I enjoy using it, but also our clients. It simply adds so much value. Before programs like Sketchup, you have to build a physical model which takes time to do but also a paint to make revisions.
I have tried other 3D modeling programs but Sketchup is the most user-friendly. It’s very intuitive actually. If you played “Sims”, I’m pretty sure you can figure this out!
Sketchup Pro vs. Sketchup Free
At the risk of stating the obvious, Sketchup Pro has a wider range of tools that you can use. Most of them will be too much for someone who is just trying to roughout a sketch of their house or see the size and shape of deck they want.
Good news for all of you. Sketchup created a free program that anyone can use. No strings attached. All you need to do is create a Trimble account or use your google account.
The floor plan was done in Sketchup. Fun Fact: I offered to give the venue a copy of the file for a discount, but they politely said “no”.
My wife and I used Sketchup to plan our wedding reception. I didn’t have the “Pro” version at the time and I was able to use this program to show my wife the different ways of how we can setup the venue. It was a neat tool that not only helped us visualize the place but also helped those who helped us setup.
I can see multiple ways an individual can use this free program; from a simple furniture rearrangement to full home renovations. I know we’re getting in the season of people wanting to build stuff, so I wanted to make sure you are equipped for your summer project!
